A Legacy of Care, A Community that Cares: Ward Funeral Home

Some businesses are part of a community’s history. Others help shape its future. For Ward Funeral Home, it’s about both.

Honouring lives, supporting families and building community in Weston Village

Serving families since 1914, Ward Funeral Home has been part of Weston Village for more than 110 years.  When I stopped in to chat with Jon Rolleman, who recently took over as manager, I learned that the funeral home is now under new leadership. Today, the team continues to guide families through some of life's most difficult moments while maintaining strong ties to the neighbourhood.

Every Farewell Tells a Story

There's no single way to say goodbye. Some families choose a traditional funeral service, while others gather for a celebration of life filled with favourite songs, photos and stories. Some prefer a quiet, intimate farewell, while others look for something entirely unexpected.

Jon shared one particularly memorable example. A man with a terminal diagnosis, at home with his family on a clear night, once pointed to the stars and said, "That's where I'm going to be looking over you." After his passing, Jon helped the family honour those words by arranging, through a company in Florida, for his cremated remains to be sent into space.

It's an extraordinary tribute, and it reflects the approach Jon brings to Ward: helping people find ways to honour a life that feel personal and meaningful. Whether it's a familiar song, a special place or something truly out of this world, the team works with families to bring their wishes to life.

A Close-Knit Community

That same appreciation for personal connections extends to Jon’s view of Weston Village. He sees it as a close-knit community where people know one another, build relationships and have opportunities to make a difference by supporting local businesses and their neighbours.

Ward has put that belief into practice by making its parking lot available for the Weston Village Farmers’ Market, providing space for local vendors and residents to come together. Jon has also recently joined the Weston Village BIA Board, taking another step towards contributing to the neighbourhood’s future.

Lifting Each Other Up

As Jon puts it, “We can all lift each other up.” It’s a simple sentiment that speaks to the value of a connected community, where small gestures and working together can make a real difference.

After more than a century in Weston Village, Ward Funeral Home continues to care for families while playing an active role in the place it calls home.
